FUNDI WA VIATU (Shoe maker) - Umoja streets





Shoe maker, or rather shoe repairer in Umoja. Shoes are pricy parts of people wear. Usually people will be exhausting all attempts at repairing a pair off shoe before they buy a new one. Repairs range from fixing a hole, patching up the leather, to putting a new sole. The shoe maker resolves much of the problems using strong string from car tyres, a customised sewing needle, patches of leather and strong glue. They have been in service from around the early 70s to present day.

She's got such a beautiful shoulder plate, it's a shame to cover it. I've been thinking about making her a walking costume, but may go evening gown instead so she can show off her beautiful shoulders!

I'm repairing this doll for my husband's aunt. Instead of making her a whole new leather body I'm going to patch it. Really, who's going to see the body after I make her a fabulous wardrobe? I removed the wig because it's synthetic - obviously replaced in the last 130 years. As well as the few clothes that were on her.

She'll be cleaned, patched, re-wigged with a mohair wig, and outfitted with some new duds. I can't wait!
